About the Art Department In the 1978 upon the decision of the then Ministry of Science, Technology and Upper Education, at the Pedagogical High School in Cracow, new studies on Artistic Education has been established. A few young artists, graduates of various faculties of the Academy of Fine Arts, led by Dr. Wojciech Kubiczek, in the co-operation with the Programme Artistic Board (gathering experienced professors and lecturers of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, working in 1977-1984), started the difficult process of organization of the new didactic institution – Division of Fine Arts Education. It was the idea of the programme to educate during four years of intramural studies professional teachers of art at the primary and secondary schools. The Division has been naturally transformed, first in 1985 into Independent Division, then in 1993 into the Institute of Fine Arts Education (upon the decision of the Pedagogical High School Senate), and finally in 2000 into the Art Institute of the Pedagogical University. In the academic year 1980/81 the then Division started extramural studies and after first difficult years, in spite of initial essential hesitations, the idea has been still continuing successfully. In 2005 the Institute has started the separate studies on Graphic Arts. In 2008 the rank of the University has been confirmed in the legal statute and the Institute has been replaced by he independent Department. The development caused the change of the structure. At present day, there are 34 academic teachers (5 regular professors, 12 assistant professors, 12 scholars with PhD degree, 5 scholars with MA degree) working at the Department in three chairs: The Chair of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture, The Chair of Graphic and Visual Design, The Chair of the Theory of Art and Fine Arts Education.
