| Poet, philosopher,
sculptor, draftsman, historian of art, simple worker - Cyprian
Kamil Norwid was the only of the four great Polish Romantics to
have set foot in the United States, where he spent sad and
lonely two years. Although initially appreciated in his
lifetime, ended his life in a Paris poorhouse. His later poetry
was only appreciated in the 20th century, when he became a major
influence of various generations of poets. His major works, few
of which appeared in his lifetime, include Promethidion
(1851), a treatise on art in verse and a collection of poems, Vade-mecum
(written 1865-6, published 1947). |
