Sonnet V

On the Impermanent Love of the Things of This World

It's hard not to love but in love to stay
Poor solace, when our thoughts seduced by lust
Sugarcoat to excess those things which must
Undergo changes and suffer decay.

Who will obtain enough satisfaction
From gold, scepter, fame, pleasure, charming face
So that in his heart they would fill much space
And from all fears he would find protection?

Love is the right course of our life on earth,
But our body, made of the elements,
Praising what it knows had a feeble birth,

Deceives the soul, which ne'er finds sufficience,
When You, eternal and true perfection,
It doesn't see, the aim of its affection.

O holy Lord, grant us, let us have, too,
What you command, and return it to you.
