Clarification is inextricably connected with
rationalisation. Wherever the original is approaching the indefinite, the
literary language of the target culture attempts to define, to elucidate the
element in question. Nevertheless, by clarification Berman meant two other
phenomena:
-
clarification can be the elicitation of
something that was concealed, hidden in the original. Apparently, this
phenomenon is considered positive, as a new light shades on the matter.
-
clarification renders clear (for
instance by paraphrases) what the author desired to remain concealed or
repressed.
Example
'He is all my art to me now', said the painter gravely.
'On jest teraz ca³± moj± sztuk±' powa¿nie odpar³ m³ody
malarz.
