Problems in Translation

This course, based on the instructor's own translating experience as well as on translation studies literature, deals with the most common problems encountered in translation. It will explore the most frequent types of translation error, from the most simple (and the most hair-raising!) that are entirely the translator's fault, to those that cannot be avoided, since they stem from that horrible factor, untranslatability. Various categories of this phenomenon will be explored in connection with Antoine Bermans 12 deformative tendencies. Finally, the phenomenon of translation as a series will be discussed using specific examples from literature. As to the activities conducted in this course, we will use translation criticism and comparison. Students' work will be focused on reaching a sensible compromise between the source and the target languages and texts.
