This session is devoted to a crucial text of Polish culture and its two English versions. You will notice obvious differences between the realizations of those translations, separated be a whole century. Jeremiah Curtin was a contemporary of Sienkiewicz and although he translated almost all of Sienkiewicz's novels, he used (at least at first) Russian translations of Poland's major writer; in fact, he first heard of Sienkiewicz as of a Russian writer! W.S. Kuniczak was a Polish-American novelist, deeply conscious of his Polishness and deeply distrustful of his predecessor's work and views on Polish issues.

As you certianly expect, untranslability runs wild in this one.
